Barnadas Huang Hosts Exclusive Debut of Ulpiano Carrasco’s Singapore Paintings
And paint Singapore he did. Starting the ball rolling on 16 January is a solo exhibition, Blazing City. To be held at the gallery, the series sees iconic Singaporean places and landmarks rendered in Carrasco’s signature vivid style. Fullerton Hotel, Boat Quay and the Marina Bay area, among others, are drenched in saturated reds and yellows, capturing the energy of the city in his distinctive jewel hues. Compared excitedly by some to a modern Van
Gogh, Carrasco reveals his passion for Singapore with typical Spanish candour, “All my waking moments I spend with the colours green, red and yellow … I cross streets and cars honk at me when I cross the red lights, my obsession with Singapore on my mind …” Exclusive to Barnadas Huang, this sale of Carrasco’s Singapore paintings comprise eight paintings measuring 100cm x 100cm, two measuring 90cm x 130cm, two measuring 90cm x 140cm and a stunning showstopper spanning 140cm x 240cm that’s a perfect size for a Good Class Bungalow. Prices start from approximately S$18,000 for the smaller works and about S$55,000 for the starring piece.Bucking the trend in the Spanish art market, which is experiencing a slump due to the Euro crisis, Carrasco’s works have increased in value consistently by at least 10% every year.
In the last five years, Carrasco pieces have increased in value by about 56%. Fuelled by strong demand from international collectors for his works, Carrasco chose Barnadas Huang for a new start to his career in Asia. According to Benjamin Ng, another of the gallery’s owners, “For the first time Ulpiano Carrasco is doing a limited series of 13 paintings on Singapore. (He) is in the prime of his career and Blazing City is said to be his best work so far. We have received very strong interest from local and international collectors.”The special occasion continues with a private preview on 16 January, after which the pieces go on sale.
This event has the support of the Embassy of Spain in Singapore and among the glitterati in attendance will be the Spanish Ambassador.
